Back in the hallway, Vorgan did his best to hush the concubines reunion while he secured Binabi and dealt with the other slaves formerly imprisoned on the island.

“What do you mean to do with us?” a timid young man asked.

Vorgan swept his gaze across the small crowd behind the thin man.

They cowered before him, many casting their eyes downward. Others shot puzzled looks at the overly excited concubines squealing and hugging behind him.

“I’m sending you to a friend of mine and freedom,” he told the man. “You are no longer bound into servitude.”

The man goggled at him, wordless.

“A friend of yours?” Chriselda asked.

“One with an inn,” Vorgan agreed.

“Thank you! Oh, thank you, good sir!” The young man sank to his knees and fawned, tears pooling in his eyes.

“No need for thanks,” Vorgan told him.

“So, then what did you spare this trash for?” Chriselda asked with a glare for the scruffy young slaver.

“Proof and information,” Vorgan responded. “He’s going to talk to a friend of ours on down the road.”

“You said nothing about talk—” Binabi choked as Vorgan’s eyes narrowed.

“Or he can talk to a different friend of mine,” Vorgan growled and reached for his spear on his back.

The group of ex-slaves behind him took notice, a few taking menacing steps forward, fists clenched.

“No!” Binabi yelped. “No need for that! I’ll talk to whoever you say!” He tried to cower away from Vorgan.

“That’s right.” Vorgan tightened the slaver’s bonds. He turned an eye to Chriselda. “I’m leaving him in your charge. The information he has is valuable, but by no means irreplaceable. Should he not prove to be the picture of a genteel young man,” he spared a moment to glare at Binabi, “you can do as you please with him.”

Binabi whipped his head around to regard Chriselda.

She unsheathed her dagger and gave him a grin the exact sharp curve of the wicked blade she bore.

He paled.

Vorgan nodded in satisfaction and paced to the group of ex-slaves. Once he had provided them with explicit instructions on how to gain their freedom, he turned his attention to his true quarry.
